Dave Smith was born in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire known chiefly as being the final resting place of Byron. His parents were solidly working class, his father being a miner and his mother worked in a textile factory. He was the first in his family to go to university, reading English at Birmingham before going on to gain a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the Institute of Education, University of London.
He spent his working life teaching English and Media Studies in a variety of comprehensive schools combined with his roles as a husband and parent. During this time he had a little success as a short story writer. As retirement approached he moved from trying to inspire students to write and appreciate poetry to producing his own. This collection is the result of that process, helped hugely by his membership of Derby Stanza.
